Soundtrack of the streets, Vintage Nation is musically, another glitch in the got damn matrix. They break down and sweep the word genre under an old southern doormat. This acoustic duo is a blend of unimaginable sounds. Inspired by acts like Ella Fitzgerald, Lou Rawls James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, Bob Dylan, Bread, and more.
Her voice shocks you; energetic harmonies and honey like rhythms and lyrics. While his country twang guitar strikes send jolts of energy and pure thrills down your funky bones. We sat down with our hearts beating through our chest with chills trying to predict their next move in the song, which to our delight and astonishment , Ink pulls out a penny jar that made the melody even more raw and kinetic,I aint jumpin off no bridge, Im already over the edge, the room was completely still. We were all amazed. It started the summer of 2011. Ink and Jow crossed paths in downtown Atlanta, Ga. The same night they met, they performed and amazed every person in the full room, and from that moment they knew they were destined to become one of the greatest duos of all time. Vintage Nation has a distinct sound, when you hear their music it is like a soulful cry screaming from the 4 corners of the universe. The vibration embodies hip hop roots fused with an alternative soulful jazz; human jukebox ,known to start a party revival wherever they are. Vintage Nation now has the world waiting patiently for the EP they are currently recording.
Rough Language is a quarterly 3 Round Poetry Competition, co-founded by Queen Sheba CEO of Below The Radar and Melissa Scott President of Traxx Girls; that brings 15 poets from around the country to battle it out for $500-$2,000 in cash. At the end of each year we bring back the top 3 winners from each quarterly slam, add 3 wild cards and have a blow out final round.
Our night starts off with an introduction to our show then a musical guest, then 3 rounds of kick butt, fall out, knee slapping, tear whipping, side splitting poetry as poets are prompted to bring their "A" game to make it to the final round and take home the prize.
Rough Language is always multilayered to satisfy the adult ADD in all of us.
There are vendors selling jewelry and anything we deem suitable for our
event, in the past, we've had body painting, live mannequins, a Dj is a
staple for our show, and visual art. We choose different "local" (only by
geography, not by skill) artists for each show to promote such a marketable
space in our colorful event.
Our audience is normally 21+ and we market to the working class that normally wouldn't frequent a poetry night but are looking for something different. We are a people for the people, our demographic stretches across color, gender, race, and religious lines. Rough Language is an upbeat, fun, enjoyable evening with an edge.
Rough Language always chooses one charity to donate part of the proceeds to; we are a grass roots organizations that prides on remembering our start. In that, we continuously give back to the communities that helped make all of the Below the Radar events successful.
